Major General Lương Xuân Việt (Viet Xuan Luong)
Major General Lương Xuân Việt is a Major General in the United States Army and the first Vietnamese American to attain the rank of general in U.S. military history. Born in Biên Hòa, Vietnam, he left his homeland with his family in 1975, joining the wave of Vietnamese refugees who rebuilt their lives in exile after the fall of the Republic of Vietnam.
Over a 34-year career in the United States Army, Major General Lương Xuân Việt rose through the ranks through discipline, perseverance, and service. He held multiple senior command positions, including Commanding General of U.S. Army Japan and Commanding General of U.S. Army I Corps (Forward)—roles that placed him at the forefront of U.S. military presence and alliance cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
His formal retirement ceremony was held on June 25, 2021, in Japan, following the completion of his final assignment as Commanding General of U.S. Army Japan.
In recognition of history carried forward across generations, Major General Lương Xuân Việt donated his military cap and medals to the Viet Museum.
Displayed alongside artifacts of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam and the refugee generation, these items bear witness to a longer story:
of loss and displacement, of renewed service in a new land, and of a commitment to duty that endured even after a nation was lost.
